The retirement guide to living cheap does not mean moving back in with the kids. The writer and wife have been retired, alone, for fifteen years. The lifestyles they have used are not only cheap and frugal, they are a lot of fun. You can do this too.
1) Our favorite and most adventurous frugal lifestyle was living on a sailboat...we enjoyed sailboat cruising in the Caribbean for eight wonderful years. It was not only fun we only spent around a $1,000 a month once in the islands. Why that cheap? Anchoring is free...no cash registers in sight...and the view was better than people paying $600 a night in a fancy resort 100 yards from our boat.
2) Consider living in an RV in your guide to living cheap. The freedom of having a steering wheel in your living room is great. The RV lifestyle is also a fine way to scout out potential "real retirement places". Decide a certain locale is not for you...fire up the engine and leave. RV park rent for a months stay is $500 or less.
3) Consider living overseas...for the eight years we were boating we visited a lot of foreign countries. We enjoyed them all and found them to be much cheaper than the US. When I suggest moving overseas lots of people roll their eyes and say "no way". Fine...give me a choice between working and retiring overseas...I'm gone. For instance, one million Americans live in Mexico. Why? For $1500 to $2000 a month you can live very well...have a maid...health insurance $23 a month. It is even cheaper in other countries. Think about it.
4) Downsizing...you can save a bundle by moving from a big home to a condo, park model or RV. Do not think you can do it? We moved from a 1800 square foot house to a 35 foot sailboat...with no problems or regrets. Surely you can move to a dwelling that is smaller than your current home. Do not let your "stuff" control you.
Yes you can still retire. We have done so for 15 years...having fun with no regrets. You can too...armed with the right information. You need the guide to living cheap. Interested?
